Academic and professional work experience goal statement ACADEMIC PROFESSIONAL GOAL STATEMENT Valuable work experience has helped me to develop strong qualitative architectural expertise along with good leadership and communication skills. This has helped me to tackle complex issues in my field of work and gives me the confidence to pursue post graduate studies. I am Sruthi Maria George, currently working in an architectural consultants firm as a Junior Architect. With a strong desire to create artistic, creative and imaginative building structures, I chose Bachelor of Architecture for my under graduate studies. After completing my bachelors, my next step was to get a job in a challenging and dynamic environment and so I did find one as soon as I returned to my parents residing in United Arab Emirates. Throughout my work tenure so far, I have been working on challenging design projects which emphasized on creating healthy and eco-friendly buildings and environment. One of the major requirements to be fulfilled while planning and designing of the projects was the attainment of a ‘PEARL 2 rating, a class of sustainable approach known as ‘ESTIDAMA which consists of sustainable planning strategies. This field influenced me to know more about the environmental aspects in order to widen my knowledge and career skills. With the rise of disasters occurring around the world, we as humans need to be aware of the factors that lead to these natural calamities. A few environmental issues identified would be as follows: Global warming Climate change being recently observed is the main result of this global warming. The ozone layer of the earth being depleted with the increased use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in refrigerants, propellants and solvents, emission of carbon dioxide from burning of fossil fuels (petrol, diesel, kerosene) and other greenhouse gases. This degradation of the ozone layer affects the ultraviolet filtration of the suns radiation, causing the earths temperature to rise and having negative impacts on the living beings on earth. Energy exhaustion Tremendous use of non renewable sources such as fossil fuels, natural gas and coals over the years are being depleting and adverse effects on air quality causing human and environmental problems. These needs to be replaced with renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass energies etc. Landfill waste With the increase in population and their activities, waste disposal is taking place on a higher rate. The adverse effects of this landfill wastes are pollution of the environment, emission of methane gases which is a greenhouse gas leading to the depletion of the ozone layer and other hazardous impact on the livings things and   the environment. This needs to be reduced by incorporating waste reduction and recycling strategies. Threat to ecosystems and endangered species Biodiversity enhances the productivity of the ecosystems. Threat to biodiversity leads to the destruction of the ecosystem, thus affecting the ecological pyramid and the food web. A recent article which caught my eyes, a killing game of dolphins and whales which takes place in Denmark by the local teens to show that they adults. These creatures have become near to extinction due to this. Deforestation Due to the increase in human population and their activities, conversion of forests to non- forest areas for development purpose is on a rise. This contributes to the increase of carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere, loss of biodiversity and soil erosion leading to natural calamities. Pollution Air pollution resulting from the burning of fossil fuels from vehicles and industries, hence affecting the environment and the health of humans. Contaminating water bodies by disposal of wastes leads to degradation of the ecosystem and human health issues. A masters degree in environmental studies would help me to become personally aware of the existing and future environmental issues arising in todays world. It would help me to understand the issues on a broader aspect of view and to resolve them by creating environmental friendly designs contributing to the wellness of the social economy and for the beneficial use of the future generations. The main environmental specialization that I would like to do is the studies on sustainable development as this combines the social, economic and environmental aspects. As this field, is going global and is one of the major considerations in todays world, specializing in this field would be of international standards and quality. University of Illinois is one of the few and reputable institutions in the world to offer an innovative course which combines environmental studies and sustainable development as a joint online program without having me to compromise on my current working status. Hence I sought to pursue my higher education here. If given a chance to pursue my post graduate studies in University of Illinois for Masters of Environmental studies specializing in sustainable development and policy, I would prove myself to be an asset by my hard work and dedication to the department and the university. Nivea (1911)

Nivea (1911) is a worldwide body-skin care well known brand. A German company named Beiersdorf, which is founded on 1882, owns it. Nivea is a Latin word (niveus/nivea/niveum), which means â€Å"Snow White† [1]. The most important aims of Beiersdorf is to have its products as close as possible to its consumers and understand them in its many different markets and satisfy them with skin-body beauty care advanced products [1]. In return, Beiersdorf is gaining the trust and appeal from its customers. Case synopsis: Beiersdorf is one of the companies that seeks continuous and regular market development. Market can be developed by finding the gap (need) in the market and trying to fill the gap by developing a new product (satisfying the need through market-oriented approach), or through product-oriented approach by creating good quality product and introduce it to the market. Beiersdorf market research have identified a market gap which led to NIVEA VISAGE young (product) introduction in 2005 to the market in order to fill the this gap (market-oriented approach). After developing a balanced and effective marketing mix the company re-introduced the NIVEA VISAGE young range in 2007 where the product had new formula, new design, new packaging, and new name. Statement of the problem: Beiersdorf market research have identified a market gap which led to NIVEA VISAGE young (product) introduction to the market in order to fill this gap (market-oriented approach) [2]. The company needed to develop a balanced and effective marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion) in order to well suit the product, target market, and to meet its own objectives. Causes of the problem: Beiersdorf wanted to develop a balanced marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion) specifically for further optimizing of the company position in the market. Each marketing mix variable have been addressed carefully to achieve the company goals and targets. Case analysis: Beiersdorf did a market research in order to understand the market and to build effective marketing mix by identifying the target market segments. The research plan was to gather information using different research approaches and instruments such as listening directly to the consumers through focus groups, and experimental product testing. Findings were impressive and led to significant changes into the product, product price, place, and promotions. Findings of the research regarding the product showed the company the way to satisfy a significant segment. The research showed that younger costumers (age group of 13 – 19 years old) desires more dedicated face care product that offers a ‘beautifying’ benefit, instead of a solution to skin problems [1]. Competitors available product at that time mostly concentrates on skin problems solution rather than normal face care products. Using experimental research approach, the final product improved and changes included: * The product made far more effective and consumer friendly * The formula used for some products has been changed and natural substances have been employed * New products introduced to the market * Attractive product pack design targeting young women group used * Larger pack size introduced with new product description. Each of these product improvements has its own purpose weather to attract the young women segment, Show the company commitment toward the environment, or strengthen the product range, to better meet the needs of the market. Pricing of the any new product has to provide value for money in the market and to be attractive for the targeted segment customers to buy. Several pricing strategies firms can use such as cost based pricing (the price cover the cost or include some profit), Penetration price (initial low price ), and price skimming ( premium price ‘first to buy’ customers). NIVEA VISAGE young re-introduced with a higher price than the previous edition of the product. However, this illustrated value for money were new natural formulation has been used, packaging and extended product range [2]. Nivea also took into consideration when pricing the product the targeted segment were young girls are targeted the product is bought by their mums. Which explains the reasonable and balanced pricing between the features the product offers, benefits of the product, and how much do is it cost. Nivea was the price leader effectively of this market segment were it sets the price level that competitors will follow or undercut by ensuring competitive price. Beiersdorf didn’t forget study regarding the place element of the marketing mix. Place often refers to distribution strategy, place where the product will be sold. One of the important aims of Beiersdorf is reaching to their targeted customers regardless of their locations. As a result, the company used different channels to reach their customers such as retail outlets where 65% of the product selling from the targeted customers occurs, and large grocery chains where the other 35% sales comes from [1]. Smaller retailers can be reached through a wholesalers and online selling of the product through a retailer where the costs of producing small orders will be high for the company. The promotion key of the marketing mix was so important to communicate with the targeted segment customer about the product availability and persuading them to buy the product [2]. Two main types of promotions are there, above-the-line (TV and newspaper advertisements) and below-the-line (events, Direct mails, PR, branding, and sales promotions). Nivea was a consumer-led in the NIVEA VISAGE young promotion where the strategy reflected the lifestyle of the targeted segment audiences and the range of the available media. Nivea used below-the-line strategy in their promotion campaign. The main part of the promotion was letting the customers to experience and test the products through distribution of the product samples. In addition, Interactive online magazine was launched and named FUN, YOUNG, & INDEPENDENT (FYI) to give the targeted customers of the young girls the confidence to become young women act independently. Also, social networks haven’t been forgotten, where NIVEA VISAGE young pages were available on MySpace and Facebook to reach as much as possible targeted audiences. Alternative recommendations: Based on the research of the market carried out by the Beiersdorf, set of recommendations might be useful suggested: * Differentiate the product specifications and names according to the age group. 3 years old girls would love to have a product named on her favorite cartoon character, which will attract her to ask about the product or buy it. * Providing a completing set of tools with product or at least one tool such as a mirror as a promotion * Sending people to houses to introduce the product * Using above-the-line promotions such as TV and yellow pages ads. * Provide a seasonal produc t where in summer provide a product edition with a lime or mint fleshing smell.

Requirements of legislation Essay

Explain how the requirements of legislation, codes of practice and agreed ways of working influence professional supervision. Legislation has leaded us to the point of view that supervision is the requirement for all staff: 1) National Minimum Standards – Supplying good practice of supervision is a mandatory requirement set by National Minimum Standards in UK– covering all criteria and aspects of practice (for example policy and procedures; job descriptions and keeping a balance between outcomes for organisation and the development of the staff), career development needs – (for instance professional training), ensuring that staff gets support from supervisors in the area where they are not coping well. In my setting the staff is supported for acquiring continuous professional development courses offered on-line by the HighScope Research Foundation, time is set for in-house CPD sessions by supervisors. One- to one sessions are held by the supervisor to identify the gaps and allocate the distribution of CPD. Staff is given clear guide lines on safe guarding and other policies, procedures and the job descriptions, realistic outcomes are set for the nursery by supervision, keeping in view the current level of development of the staff. 2) Revised EYFS Welfare requirements — In our practices this has lead to staff being advised to report to any inappropriate behavior of other staff leading to abuse and neglecting of children in the setting and the supervisors maintain absolute confidentiality of such matters Use of mobile phone is prohibited. Staff is not allowed to take pictures of children from their mobile phones. Alternatively sharing pictures on social media websites is strictly prohibited Staff is encouraged to take on CPD – 100% financial aid is provided to take online HighScope courses, once the gaps are identified by talking through the supervisor. 3) CWDC resources – performance management and dynamic and enabling supervisory relationship – This has provided a supervision tool, where quality and service standards are met at the same time retaining the staff. In my setting staff is encouraged to take new skills and knowledge and implement them. They take balanced and calculated risks and experience their new learning in action, without the supervisors taking control of their activities and blaming them for unexpected outcomes. Eventually this leads to success in outcomes. High quality care services are provided with new skills, development of integrated working is supported along with CPD.
